Pick a session you’ll feel comfortable with
Choose 30 minutes if there’s one area you’d like to focus on, such as your upper back after a long drive. An hour gives the therapist more room to move between areas and still spend extra time where you ask. If you’re deciding between a longer session and an hour, think about how long you’d enjoy lying on the table. You can always choose a different length on your next visit.
A chair massage lets you stay clothed and works well if you’d like to focus on your neck, shoulders, and upper back. Look for the no-oil table option if you want to stay clothed while lying down. For a foot massage, wear shoes you can slip off easily.
Start with one request and one preference
When you meet your therapist, name the area you’d like them to spend time on and the pressure you usually enjoy. “I’ve been at a desk all week. Could we spend extra time around my shoulders and start with light pressure?” gives them a clear place to begin. Let them know which areas you’d like to skip and if you’re sensitive to an oil or fragrance.
If you’re unsure what light or firm feels like, say so and ask your therapist to check in early. It’s also fine to mention that you’d like a quiet session. You can keep conversation brief while still giving feedback about the pressure or the room temperature.
Get settled on the table
Before a table massage, your therapist can explain which way to lie down and how to position yourself under the sheet. You can change in private and undress to the level you’re comfortable with. During the session, the sheet covers you except where your therapist is working. Ask for help with positioning if the face cradle or the angle of your neck feels awkward.
Once the massage starts, speak up when you want a change. “A little lighter on the left side” or “could we spend another minute here?” is enough. If you feel too warm or would like to pause, tell your therapist in the moment so they can adjust.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change my mind about pressure during a massage?
Yes. Ask your therapist to adjust when the pressure feels too strong, too light, or different on one side. You can also ask to skip an area or take a pause.
How do I choose between a chair massage and a table massage?
Try a chair session for a shorter, clothed massage focused on the upper body. Choose the no-oil table massage if you’d rather lie down and keep your clothes on.
